This art piece is based on my interpretation of Sleeping Beauty. I imagined her as a free spirit who doesn’t want to be locked up in a golden cage forever. She sits in an abandoned, derelict swimming pool, dreaming about her future.

The Message Behind the Artwork

Sleeping Beauty in this artwork has come to represent the resilience and ambition of the modern woman. All too often, Sleeping Beauty is confined to a golden cage or kept artificially asleep by societal expectations, denied the opportunity to fully explore their potential. This art piece is a passionate, sometimes controversial, interpretation of this iconic fairytale. It follows the story of a young woman, gleaming with independence and vibrancy, in an abandoned swimming pool. To many, it symbolises her struggle to break free from the cage she’s been assigned, a reminder of the strength and courage required for real liberation. Instead of Sleeping Beauty’s story ending on a note of false compliance, this reimagining transcends those cultural expectations and encourages us to dream wildly and think outside of the box. It’s a revolutionary, empowering vision of what it looks like when women embrace their ambitions and take control of their lives.

This powerful message is something that we can all learn from. No matter who we are or where we come from, each of us has the right to dream and seek out the future of our own design. As Rachel puts it, “Let us all draw inspiration from this beautiful story, and never let ourselves be held back by outdated social norms and false compliances.” It’s up to us to strive for something greater and write the stories of our dreams.
